About NCERT Class 10 Maths Chapter 3 Ex 3.4

Class 10 Maths Chapter 3 Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables Ex 3.4 is based on the elimination method of solving a pair of linear equations in two variables. You must learn how to use this method step by step if you want to get the right solutions every time. Here are some points to remember about Ex 3.4 of Class 10 Maths Chapter 3:

  • In the elimination method, we remove one of the two variables of a linear equation. This way we get a linear equation in one variable which is much easier to solve.
  • A problem that can be solved by the elimination method can also be solved by substitution or graphical methods.

Using the elimination method to solve a pair of linear equations in two variables:

Step 1: Multiply both the equations by some suitable non-zero constants to make the coefficients of one variable (either x or y) numerically equal.

Step 2: Add or subtract one equation from the other so that one variable gets eliminated. If you get an equation in one variable, go to Step 3. Otherwise, check the following conditions:

  • If in Step 2, we obtain a true statement involving no variable, then the original pair of equations has infinitely many solutions
  • If in Step 2, we obtain a false statement involving no variable, then the original pair of equations has no solution, i.e., it is inconsistent.

Step 3: Solve the equation in one variable (x or y) so obtained to get its value.

Step 4: Substitute this value of x (or y) in either of the original equations to get the value of the other variable.

Types of questions included in exercise 3.4 of Class 10 Maths Chapter 3 Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables:

Ex 3.4 Q1: In this question, you are given pairs of linear equations in two variables and you have to solve them using the elimination method. You can easily solve this question if you remember the steps given above. Check our NCERT Solutions and see how to solve this question stepwise.

Ex 3.4 Q2: In this question, you are given 5 different word problems. You have to formulate pairs of linear equations and then solve them using the elimination method. This is an important question that also tests your analytical abilities as you formulate the linear equations based on the situations given to you.
