About NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Maths Chapter 3 Ex 3.2

Before you start solving the NCERT Exercise 3.2 of Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables, you must take note of the concept introduced in this exercise. Given below are some important points that will help you in solving this exercise:

Consider the pair of linear equations as:

a1x + b1y = c1

a2x + b2y = c2

If we draw a graph of these two linear equations, there are three possibilities:

(i) The two lines will intersect at one point.

(ii) The two lines will not intersect, however far they are extended, i.e., they are parallel.

(iii) The two lines are coincident lines.

There can be three types of solutions:

  1. Unique solution
  2. Infinitely many solutions
  3. No solution

Consistent Linear Equations: If a system of simultaneous linear equations has at least one solution then the system is said to be consistent.

  • When the graphs of two equations intersect at a unique point, they are called consistent equations with a unique solution.
  • When the graphs of two equations are coincident, they are called consistent equations with infinitely many solutions.

Inconsistent Linear Equations: If a system of simultaneous linear equations has no solution, then the system is said to be inconsistent.

  • The graph of such equations consists of two parallel lines.

Exercise questions of NCERT Class 10 Maths Chapter 3 Exercise 3.2:

Ex 3.2 Q1: In this question, you are given two word problems. You have to write a pair of linear equations for them and find their solutions graphically. Check our NCERT Solutions to see how to solve this question on a graph.

Ex 3.2 Q2: In this question, you just have to compare the ratios of a1/a2, b1/b2 and c1/c2 and find whether the lines representing the given pairs of linear equations intersect at a point, are parallel or coincident. You can easily solve this question using the formulae given above.

Ex 3.2 Q3: In this question, you have to compare a1/a2, b1/b2 and c1/c2  and find whether the given pair of linear equations are consistent, or inconsistent. Check our NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Maths Chapter 3 Ex 3.2 and see how to solve this question quickly.

Ex 3.2 Q4: In this question, you are given some pair of linear equations. You have to find whether they are consistent or inconsistent and if they are consistent, you have to find the solution graphically. You know that a consistent pair of linear equations can either have infinitely many solutions or a unique solution.

Ex 3.2 Q5: This is a word problem kind of question where you have to form linear equations based on the perimeter and length and breadth of a rectangular garden. Do you know how to formulate a linear equation? Check our NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Maths Chapter 3 Ex 3.2 to know how to solve this question.

Ex 3.2 Q6: In this question, you are given a linear equation in two variables. You have to find another linear equation in two variables such that the geometrical representation of the pair is intersecting lines, parallel lines, and coincident lines. Find its step by step solution in our free NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Maths Chapter 3 Ex 3.2.

Ex 3.2 Q7: In this question, you are given two linear equations in two variables. You have to find the coordinates of the triangle formed with these two linear equations and the x-axis. This is an interesting question that you can solve quickly if you understand the concepts of this exercise.
