The third exercise of the Coordinate Geometry chapter is based on finding the area of triangles. This exercise includes 5 questions all of which are important from the exam perspective. Let us see what is included in this exercise.

In junior classes, you have already studied that the area of a triangle is calculated using the formula: Area of Triangle = 1/2 X Base X Height 

In Class 9, you have also studied Heron’s formula for calculating the area of a triangle. Now, suppose you are given a triangle ABC with coordinates A(x1,y1), B(x2,y2) and C(x3,y3) 

Area of triangle ABC = Area of trapezium ABQP + Area of trapezium APRC – Area of trapezium BQRC.

So, the area of triangle ABC is given by: 

You must remember this formula as it is the easiest way to find the area of a triangle when you know its coordinates.

Ex 7.3 Q1: In the first question of this exercise, you are given the coordinates of the vertices of two triangles. You have to find their respective areas. It is a simple question where you have to simply apply the formula given above and calculate the area.
