About NCERT Class 10 Maths Chapter 14 Ex 14.3

Before you start solving this exercise, you must take a look at the concept of median for grouped data. In Class 9, you have already studied how to find the median for ungrouped data. This concept is used in higher studies so you must prepare it well in Class 10. Let us see how to find median of grouped data

Median: The median is a measure of central tendency which gives the value of the middle-most observation in the data.

Median of ungrouped data: To find the median of ungrouped data, we first arrange the data values in ascending order.

If n is odd, the median is given by the observation at:

If n is even, the median is the average of observations at the given values:

Median of grouped data: To find the median of grouped data, we have to first find the cumulative frequency and n/2.

Then, we find the median class, which is the class of the cumulative frequency near or greater than the value of n/2.

Then, the median is calculated by:

Where l = lower limit of the median class

n = no. of observations

cf = cumulative frequency of the class preceding to the median class

f = frequency of the median class

h = size of class

Types of questions included in NCERT Class 10 Maths Chapter 14 Statistics Ex 14.3:

Ex 14.3 Q1: In this question, you are given a frequency distribution table for the monthly consumption of electricity of 68 consumers of a locality. You have to find the median, mean and mode of the data and compare them.  Find how to solve this question with comprehensive explanations in our NCERT Class 10 Maths Solutions for Ex 14.3.

Ex 14.3 Q2: In this question, you are given a frequency distribution table with two missing values. It is also given that the mean of the data is 28.5. You have to find those two missing values. This question is the opposite of question 1. If you cannot solve it on your own, our NCERT Solutions are your handy guide.

Ex 14.3 Q3: In this question, you are given a frequency distribution table of ages of 100 life insurance policyholders. You have to calculate the median age if the policies are given only to persons having age 18 years onwards but less than 60 years.

Ex 14.3 Q4: This question includes a frequency distribution table for the lengths of 40 leaves of a plant that are measured correct to the nearest millimetre. You have to find the median length of the leaves. The class intervals in this question are not continuous. So, first, you have to convert them into continuous class intervals and then solve the question.

Ex 14.3 Q5: In this question, you are given a frequency distribution table for the life of 400 neon lamps. You have to find the median life of a lamp. It is a simple question, but make sure that you make no calculation mistakes while finding the median using the formula. Check our NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Maths Chapter 14 Ex 14.3 in case of any confusion.

Ex 14.4 Q6: In this question, a frequency distribution table describing 100 surnames that were randomly picked up from a local telephone directory and the frequency distribution of the number of letters in the English alphabets in the surnames is given to you. You need to determine the mean, median and mode of the surnames.

Ex 14.4 Q7: In the last question of this exercise, you are given the weights of 30 students in a class. You have to find the median weight of the students. Check our NCERT Solutions and confirm your answer to this question.

  1. Is there any relationship between Mean, Median and Mode?

Yes, 3 Median = Mode + 2 Mean. You can easily understand this relationship by plotting the graphs of mean, median and mode of a data set.

  1. Is exercise 14.3 of Class 10 Maths NCERT Chapter 14 Statistics important?

Yes, every exercise of Chapter 14 is important as you can be asked a question related to any topic out of mean, median and mode in the CBSE board exam. You could have to find all the three central tendencies in a question. So, you must practice this exercise thoroughly.
