About NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Maths Squares and Square Roots Ex 6.4

Before you start practising the NCERT exercise questions for Class 8 Maths Squares and Square Roots Ex 6.4 you must understand the following point:

Steps to find out the square root of a number using long division method:

Step 1: Starting from the digits at the unit's place, place a bar over every pair of numbers. If the number of digits is odd, then the left-most single-digit will also have a bar, otherwise not.

Step 2: Take the largest number as a divisor whose square is less than or equal to the number on the extreme left. Divide and write quotients.

Step 3: Bring down the number which is under the next bar to the right side of the remainder.

Step 4: Double the value of the quotient and enter it with a blank on the right side.

Step 5: Guess the largest possible digit to fill the blank which will also become the new digit in the quotient, such that when the new divisor is multiplied to the new

quotient the product is less than or equal to the dividend.

Some properties of the square root of a number:

  • The Square root of an even perfect square is even and that of an odd Perfect square is odd.
  • Since there is no number whose square is negative, the square root of a negative number is not defined.
  • If a number ends with an odd number of zeroes, then it cannot have a square root which is a natural number.
  • If the unit digit of a number is 2, 3, 7 or 8 then the square root of that number (in natural numbers) is not possible.
  • If m is not a perfect square, then there is no integer n such that the square root of m is n.
