For any quadratic equation in the form of ax2 + bx + c = 0, b2 - 4ac is known as its discriminant. This discriminant is used to find out the nature of the roots of the quadratic equation.

  2. If b2 - 4ac = 0, the quadratic equation has two equal real roots

The roots of a quadratic equation, ax2 + bx + c = 0 are given by:

 

x = (-b ± b2 - 4ac) )/ 2a 

 

If  b2 - 4ac > 0, the two roots are given by:

 

Root 1: -b/2a + b2 - 4ac)/ 2a 

 

Root 2: -b/2a - b2 - 4ac)/ 2a 

 

If b2 - 4ac = 0, then the roots are given by: 

 

Root 1: x = -b/2a

 

Root 2: x = -b/2a
