About NCERT Class 10 Maths Chapter 14 Ex 14.4

A graphical representation of data helps in understanding it in a better way than numerical representation. In Class 9, you have already studied how to create histograms, bar charts, and frequency polygons. Now, in Class 10 Maths Chapter 14 Ex 14.4 you will learn how to represent frequency distribution in a graph.

To represent a cumulative frequency distribution graphically, you have to mark the upper limits of the class intervals on the horizontal axis (x-axis) and their corresponding cumulative frequencies on the vertical axis (y-axis), choosing a convenient scale.

Once you have plotted the points, join them with a free hand and form a curve. The curve we get is called a cumulative frequency curve, or an ogive (of the less than type or more than type).

When we plot the lower limits on the x-axis and their corresponding cumulative frequency on the vertical axis, then we get a curve which is called a cumulative frequency curve or an ogive curve of more than type.

When we plot a graph with an upper limit of the class intervals on the horizontal axis and their corresponding cumulative frequency on the vertical axis, then we get a curve which is called a cumulative frequency curve or an ogive curve of less than type.

Types of questions included in NCERT Class 10 Maths Chapter 14 Ex 14.4

This exercise includes only 3 questions and in each question, you have to represent the given cumulative frequency data in graphical form. Let us see in detail:

Ex 14.4 Q1: In this question, you are given a frequency distribution of the daily income of 50 workers of a factory. You have to convert the distribution above to a less than type cumulative frequency distribution and draw its ogive. Find how to solve this question step by step in our NCERT Class 10 Maths Chapter 14 Ex 14.4.

Ex 14.4 Q2: In this question, you are given the frequency distribution of 35 students of a class. You have to draw a less than type ogive for the given data, obtain the median weight from the graph and verify the result by using the formula. You must practice such questions for your board exam.

Ex 14.4 Q3: In this question, you are given the production yield per hectare of wheat of 100 farms of a village. You have to change the distribution to a more than type distribution and draw its ogive. Many students find this question a little difficult, but its trick is very easy once you do it step by step.
