About NCERT Class 8 Maths Chapter 5 Data Handling

Data is an important part of everyday life. This is why you must become familiar with the different concepts of data handling from an early stage. In higher classes, you will study data handling in Statistics and Probability. Here are some important points related to this chapter that will help you in solving the NCERT exercises easily:

  • Unorganised data is also known as raw data
  • The number of times any data item occurs is called its frequency. For example, the frequency of 2 in the data set “3, 5, 6, 2, 1, 0, 7, 8, 2, 3, 2” is 3.
  • A histogram is a type of bar diagram, where the class intervals are shown on the horizontal axis and the heights of the bars show the frequency of the class interval.
  •  A circle graph shows the relationship between a whole and its part.
  • A pictograph is when we represent data through pictures or symbols.
  • A bar graph represents the information with the help of bars of the same width with equal gaps but the height of the bars represent the respective values.
  • A double bar graph is used when we have to compare two different data sets or two quantities simultaneously.
  • If we have a large number of quantities then we need to group the observation and then make the table. Such a table is called a Grouped Frequency Distribution Table.
  • Important terms related to grouped frequency table are:
    • Class Interval or Class: When all the observations are classified in several groups according to their size then these groups are called Class Interval.
    • Lower-class Limit: The lowest number in every class interval is known as its Lower-class Limit.
    • Upper-class Limit: The highest number in every class interval is known as its Upper-class Limit.
    • Width or Size or Magnitude of the Class Interval: The difference between the upper-class limit and the lower class limit is called the Size of the Class Interval.
  • Probability is calculated by:Number of outcomes that make an eventTotal number of outcomes of the experiment
