About NCERT Class 8 Maths Chapter 14 Factorisation Solutions

You have already learned how to find the prime factors of a number or how to write a number in prime factor format. In Class 8, you learn how to write algebraic expressions in the form of factors. Given below are some important points related to the chapter that will help you solve the NCERT exercises of Factorisation chapter quickly.

Factorisation of Algebraic Expressions:

  • An algebraic expression can be written as a product of numbers, algebraic variables or even smaller algebraic expressions. This is known as factorisation of algebraic expressions.
  • For example, (x+y) (2x+3), 3xy, 5(x+1)(x+2), are algebraic expressions in factor form. However, x2 + 2xy, x2 + 5x + 12 are algebraic expressions that are not in factor form.

Finding Factors of an Algebraic Expression:

  • Method of common factors:
    • For example, to factorise 3y + 6 we can take 3 as the common term. So, 3y+6 = 3(y+6). So, factorisation of 3y+6 = 3 (y+6)
    • In this method, you have to find the common terms in the algebraic expression and write each term as a product of irreducible factors.

  • Method of regrouping terms:
    • In this method, you have to rearrange the algebraic expression so that you can convert it into factored form.
      For example, 6xy – 4y + 6 – 9x.
      Here you can rearrange the terms as 6xy - 4y -9x + 6
Now, taking common factor, we get
      2y (3x - 2) - 3 (3x - 2)
      (2y - 3) (3x - 2)
  • Using identities for factorisation:
    • (a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2
    • (a - b)2 = a2 - 2ab + b2
    • (a + b) (a – b) = a2 – b2
    • (x + a) (x + b) = x2 + (a + b) x + ab

Division of algebraic expressions:

  • You can divide an algebraic expression by a monomial by simplifying the algebraic expression
  • You can divide a polynomial by a monomial by converting the polynomial into factored form and finding the common term
  • You can also use cancellation method to divide a polynomial by a monomial
  • You can divide a polynomial by a polynomial by matching the factors of the dividend polynomial as the divisor polynomial
  • You may also use the algebraic identities in division of polynomials
