About NCERT Class 8 Maths Chapter 13 Direct and Inverse Proportions

As the name of the chapter suggests, the main topics of this chapter are direct proportions and inverse proportions. The questions of this chapter are based on finding the relationship between two quantities and identifying whether they are directly proportional to each other or inversely proportional to each other. Given below are some important points related to this chapter:

  • Direct Proportion: Two quantities x and y are said to be in direct proportion if they increase (decrease) together in such a manner that the ratio of their corresponding values remains constant.
  • a and b will be in direct proportion if ab = k (k is constant) or a = kb
  • Methods to solve problems of direct proportion:
  1. Tabular method: We know that,

So, if one ratio is given then we can find the other values also. (The ratio remains constant in the direct proportion).

  1. Unitary method: We can use the following relation to solve a problem:

ab = k or a = kb

  • Inverse Proportion: Two quantities x and y are said to be in inverse proportion if an increase in x causes a proportional decrease in y (and vice-versa) in such a manner that the product of their corresponding values remains constant.
  • a and b will be in inverse proportion if k = ab
  • When two quantities a and b are in inverse proportion then they are written as a = 1b

The NCERT Chapter 13 Direct and Inverse Proportions includes 2 exercises. The first exercise is based on an introduction to proportionality and direct proportion. You have to apply the tabular method and the unitary method to solve the exercise questions. The second exercise of this chapter is based on inverse proportion. Most of the questions in this exercise are word problems. You must read every word problem carefully and try to formulate an inverse proportion between the given quantities.
