Coordinate geometry includes three exercises which are based on the following topics. Revise them thoroughly before you start practising the NCERT exercises of this chapter. 

  • Coordinate geometry is a branch of mathematics that helps in presenting geometric figures in a two-dimensional plane. 
    • The plane that divides the space into two dimensions is known as a cartesian plane or coordinate plane. 
    • The horizontal line on the cartesian plane is called the x-axis, and the vertical line is called the y-axis.
  • The point of intersection of the axes is called the origin.
  • There are four quadrants in the cartesian plane, the values of which are: 
    • I quadrant: (+x, +y)
    • II quadrant: (-x, y)
    • III quadrant: (-x, -y)
    • IV quadrant: (x, -y)
  • The distance of a point from the y-axis is called its x-coordinate, or abscissa, and the distance of the point from the x-axis is called its y-coordinate, or ordinate.
  • If x ≠ y, then (x, y) ≠ (y, x), and (x, y) = (y, x), if x = y.
  • The coordinates of a point on the x-axis are of the form (x, 0) and that of the point on the y-axis are (0, y).
