The NCERT Class 9 Maths Chapter 1 Exercise 1.6 is based on the laws of exponents for real numbers. You must revise the following laws before solving this exercise:

  • am × an = am+n
  •  am/ an = am-n, m > n.
  • (am)n = amn
  • (am × bm) = (a × b)m
  • a m b m = ( a b )m
  • a0 = 1
  • a-n = 1 /an

Here ‘a’ and ‘b’ are any real numbers and ‘m’ and ‘n’ are rational numbers. 

Example: 124.12-8 = ? 

Using the identity: am × an = am+n

124.12-8 = 12(4 +(-8)) = 12(-4)

Using the identity: a-n = 1 /an

12(-4) = 1/124

Example: 72.52 = ?

Using the identity: a m b m = ( a b )m

72.52 = (7.5)2 = (35)2 = 1225
