To solve the third exercise of Chapter 5 Arithmetic Progressions, you must know the following concepts: 

 

Arithmetic Progression: An arithmetic progression or AP is a list of numbers in which each term is obtained by adding a fixed number to the preceding term except the first term.

 

It is given by: a1 , a2 , a3 , . . ., an or a, a + d, a + 2d, a + 3d, . .

 

Common Difference: The fixed number that is added to each term of a list of numbers except the first term to form an AP is called the common difference of the AP. It can be positive, negative or zero. 

 

It is given by: a2 – a1 = a3 – a2 = . . . = an – an – 1 = d, where d is the common difference. 

 

The nth term of an AP: The nth term of the AP with first term a and common difference d is given by an = a + (n – 1) d. 

 

The sum of first n terms of an AP: It is given by the following formula 

 

S = n/2  [2a (n-1)d]

S = n/2  [a +a (n-1)d]

S = n/2  [a +an]

Let an = l 

S = n/2  [a + l]

 

Sum of n positive integers is given by: 

 

Sn = n(n+1)2

 

Types of questions included in exercise 5.3 of NCERT Class 10 Maths Chapter 5: 

  1. The first type of questions in this exercise are the ones where you are given an arithmetic progression and you have to find its sum up to the given number of terms. Question 1 and Question 2 are based on this pattern. 

  2. The second type of questions in this exercise are the ones where you are given at least three values out of the first term, common difference, nth term of an AP, the sum of n terms and the number of terms and you have to find the other two. Question 3 to Question 9 are based on this concept. You will find word problems in this category as well. 

  3. The third category of questions involve APs formed by a series of odd numbers, multiples or factors of a number. Questions 12 to 14 are based on this concept. For example, in Q14 you have to find the sum of odd numbers between 0 and 50.
