Writing numbers in general form: 

We find the general form of a number by adding the product of the digits with their place values.

  1. General form of a two-digit number

Consider a two-digit number ab where a and b are the two digits of the number. The general form of ab is given by:

ab = a × 10 + b = 10a + b

Example:

23 = 2 x 10 + 3 = 20 + 3 

 

  1. General form of a three digit number

Consider a three digit number abc where a, b and c are the three digits of the number. The general form of abc is given by: 

abc = 100 × a + 10 × b + c = 100a + 10b + c

Example:

325 = 100 x 3 + 10 x 2 + 5 

= 300 + 20 + 5

 

Divisibility test:

  • Divisibility by 2: If the number ends with an even number i.e. 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 then it will always be divisible by 2.
  • Divisibility by 3: If the sum of all the digits of the given number is divisible by 3, then that number will also be divisible by 3.
  • Divisibility by 4: If the last two digits of the number are divisible by 4 then that number will also be divisible by 4.
  • Divisibility by 5: If the number ends with ‘0’ or ‘5’ then it will always be divisible by 5.
  • Divisibility by 6: To be divisible by 3 a number must be divisible by 2 and 3 both. i.e. you need to check for the divisibility test of 2 and 3 with that number. Or you can say that a number must end with an even number and the sum of its digit should be divisible by 3 then that number will be divisible by 6.
  • Divisibility by 7: To check if the number is divisible with 7 or not, we need to double the last digit of the number and then subtract the result from the rest of the digits and check whether the remainder is divisible by 7 or not. If the number of digits is very large then you need to repeat the process until you get the number which could be checked for the divisibility of 7.
  • Divisibility by 8: If the last three digits form a number that is divisible by 8 then the whole number will be divisible by 8.
  • Divisibility by 9: If the sum of all the digits of the given number is divisible by 9, then that number will also be divisible by 9.
  • Divisibility by 10: If the number ends with zero then it will always be divisible by 10.

Ex 16.2 Q1: In this question, you are given that 21y5 is a multiple of 9, where y is a digit. You have to find the value of y. 

 

Ex 16.2 Q2: In this question, it is given that 31z5 is a multiple of 9, where z is a digit. You need to find the value of z. In this question, you will find that there are two answers to the problem. You have to tell why it is so. 

 

Ex 16.2 Q3: In this question, it is given that 24x is a multiple of 3, where x is a digit. You have to find the value of x. You are also given a hint with this question: since 24x is a multiple of 3, its sum of digits 6 + x is a multiple of 3; so 6 + x is one of these numbers: 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, ... . But since x is a digit, it can only be that 6 + x = 6 or 9 or 12 or 15. Therefore, x = 0 or 3 or 6 or 9. Thus, x can have any of four different values.

 

Ex 16.2 Q4: In this question, it is given that 31z5 is a multiple of 3, where z is a digit. You need to find the value of z.
