About Class 8 Maths Chapter 11 Mensuration Exercise 11.4

Volume is known as the amount of space occupied by a three-dimensional object. Volume is also used interchangeably with capacity. Capacity is defined as the quantity that a container holds. So, if a box holds 5 litres of water its capacity or volume will be 5 litres or 5000 cm3. You must remember these three important formulae for calculating the volume of cube, cuboid and cylinder respectively.

Cuboid

l x b x h

Cylinder

Types of questions included in NCERT Class 8 Maths Chapter 11 Mensuration Exercise 11.4:

Ex 11.4 Q1: In this question, you are given a cylindrical tank and some situations. You have to specify in which situation you will find the surface area and in which situation you will find the volume. You must also know the concept of surface area thoroughly before you start solving this exercise.

Ex 11.4 Q2: In this question, you are given that the diameter of cylinder A is 7 cm, and the height is 14 cm. The diameter of cylinder B is 14 cm and the height is 7 cm.  Without doing any calculations you have to suggest whose volume is greater. Also, you have to verify it by finding the volume of  both the cylinders and checking whether the cylinder with greater volume also has a greater surface area.

Ex 11.4 Q3: In this question, you have to find the height of a cuboid whose base area is 180 cm2  and volume is 900 cm3. All you need to do is apply the formula for the volume of a cuboid and you can calculate the height.

Ex 11.4 Q4: In this question, you are given that a cuboid is of dimensions 60 cm × 54 cm × 30 cm. You have to find out how many small cubes with sides 6 cm can be placed in the given cuboid. You must know the formula for the volume of cube and cuboid respectively to solve this question. Check our NCERT Solutions to see how to solve this question step by step.

Ex 11.4 Q5: In this question, you have to find the height of the cylinder whose volume is 1.54 m3 and the diameter of the base is 140 cm.

Ex 11.4 Q6: In this question, you are given that a milk tank is in the form of a cylinder whose radius is 1.5 m and length is 7 m. You have to find the quantity of milk in litres that can be stored in the tank.

Ex 11.4 Q7: In this question, you have to find how many times will the surface area and volume of a cube increase if the edge of a cube is doubled. The question is interesting and such questions can be asked in your term-end examinations.

Ex 11.4 Q8: In this question, you are given that water is pouring into a cuboidal reservoir at the rate of 60 litres per minute. If the volume of the reservoir is 108 m3, you have to find the number of hours it will take to fill the reservoir.
