  • A polynomial is an algebraic expression that includes variables, coefficients and exponents. For example, y2+5, and 3x3−7 are polynomials. 
  • Every term in a polynomial consists of a coefficient. 
  • The highest power of the variable in a polynomial is the degree of the polynomial. For example, 2x5 + 7 polynomial has a degree of 5. 
  • The terms in a polynomial that have the same variable and same power are called like terms. For example, 2y and 4y are like terms. 
  • The terms in a polynomial that do not have the same variable or either the same power are called, unlike terms. For example, 3x2 and 3x3 are unlike terms. 2x and 2y are also unlike terms. 
  • A polynomial can be classified as the following based on the number of terms it has:
    • Zero Polynomial: The constant polynomial 0 is called the zero polynomial. 
    • Monomial: Polynomials having only one term are called monomials. For example, x3, 2xy, 6y2 are all monomials. 
    • Binomial: Polynomials having only two terms are called binomials. For example, 2x+4, 7x2-2y2 are binomials. 
    • Trinomial: Polynomials having only three terms are called trinomials. For example, a+b+c, 2a - 3b + 3 are trinomials. 
  • A zero of a polynomial p(x) is a number c such that p(c) = 0. 
  • Remainder Theorem: Let p(x) be any polynomial of degree greater than or equal to one and let a be any real number. If p(x) is divided by the linear polynomial x – a, then the remainder is p(a). 
  • Factor Theorem: If p(x) is a polynomial of degree n > 1 and a is any real number, then (i) x – a is a factor of p(x), if p(a) = 0, and (ii) p(a) = 0, if x – a is a factor of p(x).
  • Important algebraic identities for polynomials:
  • Identity I: (x + y) 2 = x 2 + 2xy + y2 
  • Identity II: (x – y) 2 = x 2 – 2xy + y2
  • Identity III: x 2 – y 2 = (x + y) (x – y)
  • Identity IV: (x + a) (x + b) = x 2 + (a + b)x + ab
