For practical day to day cars, interior space is a very influencing factor. Hence engines are placed in the front to make enough space for a second row of seats. But placing the engine at the front hampers the overall weight distribution. At higher speeds of operation this could lead to oversteering or "drifting" of the car. Hence, in f1 cars and sports cars where taking turns at high speeds without loss of traction is important, engine is placed in the middle.
