MgCO3 (aq) + 2 HNO3 (aq) --> Mg(NO3)2 (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O (l) The Mg has a valency of 2+ and the CO3 has a valency of 2- so for it to be neutral there only needs to be one Mg ion and one carbonate ion. The nitrate ion has a valency of 1-, so when it combines with Mg there must be two of them to negate the 2+ of the Mg ion and create a neutral compound.
