On the return trip it takes off at 1:50 PM. Namulevu time and lands at 6:50 PM. Los Angeles time. Assume that the flight time is the same in both directions and that the plane flies in a straight line at an average speed of 520 mi/hr. (a) What length of time is the flight (one way, as measured by the passengers)? (b) What is the time difference between Namulevu and Los Angeles? (c) Approximately where on the globe is Namulevu located?

Solve equations (1) and (2) as:

The negative sign highlights the fact that Namulevu lies to the west of Los Angeles.
It is important to note that $\Delta T = \frac{-11:00}{2}$ is mathematically equal to 5.50 but the same measured on clock is 5:30.
Substitute $\Delta T = -5.30$ in equation (1),
$T = 6: 00-(-5.30)$
$= 11:30 hours$
Therefore, the time of flight as measured by passenger is 11:30 hours.
(b)
The time difference between Namulevu and Los Angeles is given by $\Delta T$ which has already been calculated in part (a) to be equal to -5.30 hours.
(c)
Substitute 520 mi/h for V and 11.5 h for T in equation, d = VT
$d = (520\ mi/h) (11.5\ h)$
$= 5,980\ mi$
The longitude of 360° corresponds to time difference of, 24 hours therefore the longitude corresponding to time difference of is: 5.3 hours

Therefore, Namulevu is located at, 80° west of Los Angeles, and at a distance of 5890 mi.
