A stationary wave is formed, when two progressive waves of same amplitude and frequency moving in opposite directions along the same straight line superpose each other.

In physics, a standing wave – also known as a stationary wave – is a wave in a medium in which each point on the axis of the wave has an associated constant amplitude. the interference two waves which has same amplitude and freaquency it is called standing wave.
