Equivalent mass of a metal is defined as the mass which combines with 8 gram of oxygen or 35.5 grams of chlorine or 1 gram of hydrogen.

Given: Mass of metal chloride = 5.56 g

22.4 L of a gas at STP = 1mole

1.12 L of a gas at STP =  mass of chlorine =

Thus mass of metal = Mass of metal chloride - mass of chlorine = ( 5.56 -3.55) g= 2.01 g

3.55 gram of chlorine combine with = 2.01 g of metal

So 35.5 gram of chlorine combines with = of metal

Thus equivalent mass of metal is 20.1 grams
