Why is SN1 reacn carried out in polar protic solvent?

Dear Sumit,
a polar protic solvent favours SN1 because polar solvents stabilise the ionic intermedite in general and protic solvents solvate the leaving group.. thus the rate of formation of carbocation increases which is the rate determinig step of the SN1 reaction.
