Dear student
Let the length of  pipe having diameter 0.4 meter be x
Equate the length to diameter ratio , it wil be constant
x/0.4^5 = 1800/0.5^5 + 1200/0.4^5 + 600x / 0.3^5
x = 0.4318 meter

Dear student,
An equivalent length of 0.4m diameter pipe
compound piping system consists of 1800m of 0.5m,1200m of 0.40m and 600m of 0.3m new cast iron pipes connected in series,so....
let,le is equivalent  length and l1,l2,l3 are lengths of piping system,de is diameter and d1,d2,d3 respectively
le/(0.4)^5=(1800)/(0.5)^5+(1200)/(0.4)^5+(600)le/(0.3)^5
Therefore,le=0.4318 m
hope this helps you
