Dear Student

particle will go in one direction only if velocity and acceleration are in one direction.

suppose there is uniform elec field and particle is projected along the elec field or just released then it will move along field lines. but if elec field is not uniform then direction will change . particle will gain some velocity in some direction in t time then its direction of force and hence acceleration will change that will try to deviate the particle.hence it will not move along the lines.

All the best.
