Dear Sir,

Ask you ward to check opening and closing ranks for a particular branch in some particular college and than compare it with his rank. From there u guys can get idea which branch he can get, if he sits for counselling.
During online counselling, ask your son to fill all his choices prioritywise in their software then the results of the counselling will be declared and he will come to know his branch then only. If he think its good than he can lock that seat for him. Once locked you will have to pay the fees also in respective IITs
