Thats a very nice question from a 12th grade student. Even i dont have any idea during my days. I got an IIT rank and I blindly joined ion some dept. which I got for my JEE rank. :P :D
Now a days all depts in IIT has equal imprtance except some depts like agricultur, biotech ( purely research oriented)
I ask u go for Mechanical, elec. , ece or cse as these r common depts.
