In diamond each carbon atom is the same distance to each of its near carbon atoms. In this network atoms cannot move. This explains why diamonds are so hard.

dimond HAS THREE DIMENSIONAL NETWORK INVOLVING STRONG CC BONDS IN WHICH CARBON IS SP3 HYBRIDIGID AND LINKED TO FOUR OTHER CARBON ATOMS.THIS STRUCTURE MAKES DIMOND IS HARDEST.GRAPHITE POSSESSES LAYER STRUCTURE IN WHICH CARBON IS ATOM IS SP2 HYBRIDZED THERE IS WIDE SEPARATIONBETWEEN LAYERS.ONELAYER CAN SLIDE OVER EASILY ONTHE OTHER.THIS MAKES GRAPHITE SOFT
