Hydrogen has atomic no. 1 so is is placed in the first position(modern periodic table is based on atomic no. system)
Hydrogen has one electron in 1s orbital so it can loose that e- to form H+ cation like alkali metals so it is placed above group1.also it can form H- (hydride) like thehalogens.soit can also be placed with them.generally H is observed to exist as H+ rather than H- so it is generally placed over grp1.
Still, the position of hydrogen is anomalous.
