Transcription is the first step of gene expression, in which a particular segment of DNA is copied into RNA (mRNA, tRNA or rRNA) by the enzyme RNA polymerase. Both RNA and DNA are nucleic acids, which use base pairs of nucleotides as a complementary language.​

Transcription simply refers to copying of genetic information from DNA to RNA by the enzyme DNA dependent RNA polymerase. In some organisms like viruses the reverse of this process is carried out with the help of enzyme reverse transcriptase.
