Dear student
Yes you can use (a sin theta, b cos theta) also but you have to prove all formulae according to this and nothing wring in this.
Generally in books and author take (a costheta, b sin theta) hence they have solved all formulae accordingly

This is the concept of eigen function and eigen vector , you will study in college.
We can use both but for more convience and making it standard we use (a sin theta, b cos theta).
