Thecentromereis thechromosome regionthat attaches to a spindle fibre at metaphase of mitosis ormeiosisand moves to thespindle poleatanaphase, pulling the rest of the chromosome behind it. It can often be distinguished microscopically at metaphase as a thin constriction in the otherwise thick condensed chromosome, and a point at which the chromosome is flexible and free to bend.

Dear student
In eukaryotes, a centromere is a region of DNA that is responsible for the movement of the replicated chromosomes into the two daughter cells during mitosis and meiosis. There is one centromere on each chromosome, and centromeres are responsible for two major functions

the centromere is easily visualized as the most constricted region of a condensed mitotic chromosome. Although the word "centromere" is derived from the Greek words centro ("central") and mere ("part"), centromeres are not always found in the center of chromosomes

The centromere is the specialized DNA sequence of a chromosome that links a pair of sister chromatids (a dyad). During mitosis, spindle fibers attach to the centromere via the kinetochore. Centromeres were first thought to be genetic loci that direct the behavior of chromosomes
