Pollinium, or pluralpollinia, is a coherent mass ofpollengrains in a plant.
They are the product of only oneanther, but are transferred, during pollination, as a single unit. This is regularly seen in plants such asorchidsand many species of milkweeds (Asclepiadoideae).
Most orchids havewaxypollinia. These are connected to one or two elongate stipes, which in turn are attached to the stickyviscidium.
Some orchid genera havemealypollinia. These are tapering into acaudicle(stalk), attached to the viscidium. They extend into the middle section of thecolumn.
The combination of pollinia, caudicles, stipesand viscidium form thepollinarium.
