Wave Motion

Consider an electromagnetic wave that propagates in the +z direction with an electric field strength of 1 v/m pointing in the +y direction. Then the direction and magnitude of the magnetic field pulse that travels along with the electric field is :
  1. 3.33 x 10-9 T in -y direction
  2. 3.33 x 10-9 T in -x direction
  3. 3.33 x 10-9 T in +x direction
  4. 9.99 x 10-7T in -x direction

Magnitude of magnetic field = Magnitude of electric field / c          where c= speed of light = 3 x 108 m/s
                                             = 3.33 x 10-9

Direction of propagation of wave is +z and electric field strenght points in +y direction. Now, v = E x B. So the magnetic field B is in -x direction.
