why the putting of i cap j cap is nessesary

The cap above i or j is to indicate a unit vector along the +x axis and the +y axis.

The cap is put for unit vecotrs only [whose magnitude is unity] as the cap differentiates a unit vectors from other vectors.

i cap and j cap are unit vectors along +x-axis and +t-axis.Its purpose is only and only to specify direction of any vector.It reveals the directional property of vector.
