Hi there.. for such questions you just need to figure out that 2 is the maximum value of the given expression.. which holds true at x=π/2 and y=0.. hence x+y=π/2..

Dear Student,
Since you have been given that Both angles lie in the first quadrant i.e [0, PI/2]
so both sin x and cos y are positive
Now
$-1\leq sinx\leq 1$
and         $-1\leq cosy\leq 1$
So for sin x + cos y = 2
Both sin x and cos y should have their maximum values
Now recall for which value of x and y should sin x and cos y be 1 mentioned that x and y is between 0 and Pi/2
So the only possible case that can be found is
x = Pi/2 & y = 0
Hence
x + y = Pi/2......option D
