The tendency of an electrode to gain or lose electrons when it is in contact with its own ions in solution is called as electrode potential. The tendency to lose electrons is the tendency to get oxidised and thus it is reffered to as oxidation potential, while tendency to gain electrons is the tendency to get reduced and thus called as reduction potential.
The electrode potential of an electrode gets varies with change in concentration of ions in the solution in contact with the metal. It is found that increase in the concentration of cations results in increase in reduction potential of an electrode and decrease of oxidation potential and vice-versa.Thus in case of electrode potential of Zn,when the concentration of Zn ions(Zn2+,cations) increases there will be an increase of reduction potential and decrease of oxidation potential.
