In chromatography the mixture is dissolved in a fluid called the mobile phase, which carries it through a structure holding another material called the stationary phase.
Stationary phase basically helps in seperation of moving phase i.e mobile phase on the basis of the rate of theit adsorption on the stationary phase. The stationary phase should consist of number of properties like

- It should not be reactive so that it interferes with the components of mobile phase.
-It should have high but selective adsorption capacity.
- It should be easily available.

For example in case of thin layer chromatography we use silica or alumina as stationary phase.
