When we dope NaCl into MgCl2 it results in an excess of cations and a schotty defect is caused.

Schotty defect usually occurs in ionic compounds like NaCl, CsCl where the +ve and –ve ions are of similar size and have high co-ordination number. When a schottky defect is created there is an decrease in the density as cation and anions miss in the crystal lattice. This paired vacancy of equal number of anions and cations is called a schottky defect.
