in molecular nitrogen nitrogen is bonded through another nitrogen atom through triple bond. The bond are very strong due to multiple bond it becomes impossible to react.
it takes a lot of energy to break that bond, and until that bond is broken, the nitrogen cannot react with any other chemical. Thus it is chemically inert.
