  • If we press materials such as cotton or sponge with our hands, we see that they can easily be moved by pressure. Such materials that we can easily scratch or compress are called soft materials.
  • On the contrary, if we do the same to metal like iron, it won't be pressed.
  • Materials such as iron or glass that cannot be easily scratched or compressed are called hard materials.
  • Thus we see that materials can be hard, soft, rough, or smooth.
