u need a 3d visuals of a cube for that , try to look out for a 3d visuals , 
then u can understand clearly that chapter THE SOLID STATE . 
there are alternate edge center , we can proof that by the lattice structure also , but prooving that will be complicated , 
so, frst look s 3d structure , then if u wl not understand , then let me know
