The phenomenon of accumulation of molecular species at the surface rather than in the bulk of a solid or liquid is called as adsorption.The species which accumulates at the surface is termed as adsorbate and the material on the surface of which the adsorption takes place is called the adsorbent.
Adsprption is essentially an surface phenomenon.Whenever the substances are taken in finely divided state is has been found that they act as more effective adsorbent.This is due to the fact that in finely divided state the surface area get enhanced and substance become effective adsorbent.For example- charcoal,silica gel,colloids etc. act as good adsorbent in finely divided state.
