Now a days the metal electrodes r replaced with amalgams in electrochemical cells for better efficiency. How does the mercury tends to increase the metal activity so tht it acts as a better anode ???

Mercury reduces the local cell formation at anode end, which generally discharged the cell inspite not in use by making surface of anode inert towards the impurity. For example in Zn-Cu cell, mercury is rubbed at the surface of Zn electrode.
