Dear student,

If we know the balance chemical equations then we can adopt the simple mole method in which werelate reactants and products in their stoichiometric mol ratio. If we do not know balanced reactions wecan adopt POAC (principle of atomic conversion) provided whole reactant is giving into product forwhich calculation is to be made

Principle of atom conservation (POAC): Principle of atom conservation based on the conservation ofmass of atom or mole of atom, or number of atom. Balanced equations are not needed for solvingstoichiometry problem by POAC method.Consider an example

(a):KClO3                  KCl + O2 (No need of balanced equation)

Conservation of K atom:Total mol of K atom in KClO3 = Total mol of K atom in KCl1 × × × × ×

no of mol of KClO3  = 1 × × × × ×

no of mol of KClConservation of Cl atom:Total mol of Cl atom in KClO3 = Total mol of Cl atom in KCl.1 × × × × × no of mol of  KClO3 = 1

no of mol of KClConservation of oxygen atom:Total mol of oxygen atom in KClO3 = Total mol of O atom in O23 × × × × × no of mol of KClO3 = 2 × × × × × no of mol of O2
