IN WHICH CASES THE WORK DONE BY THE SYSTEM IS POSITIVE?

Dear tuparla,

There are two conventions. One says that work done on the system is positive, the other says that work done by the system is positive.

Chemists tend to use the former, physicists tend to use the latter... one of several reasons it's not a good idea to take thermodynamics in chemistry and physics at the same time.
