carbonyl carbon is joined to three other atoms by sigma bond .since these bonds utilize sp2hbridised orbitals .they lie in a plane and are 1200 apart.the remaining p-orbitals of carbon overlaps a p-orbital of oxygen to form a pi bond..oxygen,carbonyl carbon and two atoms directly attached to carbonyl carbon lie in a plane.(trigonal planer stucture)
