structure of sugars and amino acids are written on the basis of structure of glyceraldehyde and attachment of H and OH at penultimose carbon .

D-glyceraldehyde L-glyceraldehyde

just like above if in glucose if H& OH attached to penultimose carbon(adjacent to CH2OH group)then named as D-glucose.
