The Cannizzaro reaction only happens for aldehydes WITHOUT alpha hydrogens and requires high base concentrations.
There are two electrophilic sites on acetaldehyde the carbonyl carbon can add an OD- eventually forming a enol by loss of an alpha H or an alpha H can be directly removed forming the carbanion. The result will be exchange of the alpha H's for D's. In the meantime the carbanions formed will react with another aldehyde in an aldol condensation. I think the exchange will be much more rapid. and 1 brom o-2-butene
