Definition of Dieckmann reaction. : a base-catalyzed condensation of an open-chain dicarboxylic ester to form a cyclic keto ester (such as 2-keto-cyclopentane-carboxylic ester)

Dear student
The Dieckmann Condensation works well to produce 5- or 6-membered cyclic ß-keto esters, and is usually effected with sodium alkoxide in alcoholic solvent. The yields are good if the product has an enolizable proton; otherwise, the reverse reaction can complete.
C6H10O4 reacts in presence of NaOEt and H3O+ to give cyclopentanone.
