In knovenagel, the enolate ion is of type CHZZ'' so how it can attack itself. An enolate ion attacks to that carbon which have more partial positive charge due to an electronegative atom attached so it. In enolate ion it is not necsaary that Z and Z'' will more electronegative than oxygen of a carbonyl compund. Also, no. of moles of reactant plays an important role.
